Dwayne Johnson was expected to make his debut as Black Adam earlier in Shazam yet; those plans have been altered the previous year when it was declared his DC villain/antihero would instead headline his film. Ever since then there has been a lot of discussion over the project, but few crucial signs of movement, even as Johnson’s schedule has been loaded, leading to hundreds of questions about what will happen next… However, producer Hiram Garcia confirms Black Adam is “definitely happening.”
“We’re actually very deep into a script on it right now, which is coming along really well,” he told Collider. “I’m really excited with the story we’ve crafted. Look, I’ve always been a huge comic book fan. I’ve always had this dream, I’ve always wanted to — You know, you kind of have like these goals of like, ‘One day I’d love to be able to do this and this,’ and making a superhero movie was definitely always one of my dreams. For the longest time, you know you kind of have this living superhero in Dwayne Johnson, so I was always trying to figure out what’s the perfect character that will kind of fit him and his look and his build and his kind of edge and the attitude he’s got.”
Initiated back in 1945 by Otto Binder and C.C. Beck in The Marvel Family #1, Black Adam is the first champion of the wizard Shazam. Legally speaking, the protector of ancient Egypt, Teth-Adam had turned lunatic with courage, and valour and tried to seize dominance. Enraged by the power of Adam’s abuse, Shazam banished him to the most distanced star in the universe, compelling him to travel for several generations and seasons to return to Earth. Slaughtered, in his first appearance, the character was brought back to life in the 1970s, and returned to plague Captain Marvel (aka Shazam) back again. In today’s times, however, Black Adam has been recreated into a more morally grey character and has acted as an antihero, even becoming a member of the Justice Society of America.
No release date for the film has been declared as yet, but Johnson has suggested Black Adam could begin production in late 2019.
