OAKLAND — A 62-year-old man was shot in the face Thursday morning in East Oakland, authorities said.

The man was initially listed in critical condition at a hospital.

The shooting happened about 5:12 a.m. Thursday in the 400 block of 23rd Avenue near Kennedy Street.

The man was apparently in his parked car when he was shot. He was able to drive onto nearby Interstate 880 and make it to his West Oakland home, where police found him and medical personnel were called, authorities said.

The suspect fled before police got to the 23rd Avenue site.

A motive for the shooting is under investigation. Police are looking into the possibility it may have happened during an attempted carjacking.
